Rwanda’s Security Force deployed in Mozambique (RSF-5) marked the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi on April 7, 2026, joined by Mozambican security organs, government officials, and representatives of TotalEnergies Group.
Senior guests at the ceremony included Deputy Army Commander of Mozambique’s Armed Forces (FADM) Brigadier General Tomás Mponha, TotalEnergies Group representative Mr. Savio, and leaders from various religious communities residing in Mocímboa da Praia District, where Rwanda’s security forces are deployed as part of a bilateral stabilisation mission.
Rwanda’s security presence in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique’s northernmost province, is part of a bilateral deployment that has been instrumental in restoring stability to a region that was severely disrupted by an Islamist insurgency from 2017. The participation of Mozambican military officials and an energy sector representative at a Rwandan genocide commemoration reflects the depth of working relationships established through the deployment. TotalEnergies, which operates the Mozambique LNG project in the area, has a direct stake in the security situation on the ground.
Rwanda’s forces in Mozambique are expected to continue bilateral operations while observing the full week of Kwibuka commemorations. The Mocímboa da Praia ceremony signals that remembrance is embedded in RSF-5’s institutional culture, regardless of deployment location.
