Muslim faithfuls in Rwanda have joined their counterparts across the globe to celebrate the annual Holy Eid al-Fitr.
“The Ministry of Public Service and Labour informs all Employers and Employees in both public and private sectors that Friday March 20th is a public holiday in celebration of Eid al-Fitr,” the Rwanda government said.
Schools , government offices and various private sector institutions are expected to halt their activities to observe this calendar holiday.
The festival marks the end of the month-long, dawn-to-dusk fasting (sawm) during Ramadan.
It is the first of the two main festivals in Islam.
The holiday falls on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar.
Celebrations start with morning prayers, bringing together millions of worshippers
Eid prayers are always followed by a rich and balanced morning breakfast, with tables featuring sweets, dates, juices, milk, and tea.
Muslims also enjoy their first lunch during the daytime, gathering around tables at home and inviting guests over.
According to statistics, the Muslims in Rwanda are estimated to represent 2% percent of the population.
