Kenya: Hundreds dead from heavy floods

Heavy downpours have caused deaths, displacements, deluges, and landslides in East African countries, namely Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi.
On Sunday, Kenyan officials reported that the death toll from heavy rains causing flooding and other widespread damage in the country had risen to 228.
According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, the adverse weather conditions have displaced more than 212,000 people and injured at least 164.

President William Ruto has promised to rebuild educational facilities and provide 10,000 shillings ($75) in emergency financial aid to every household affected by the disaster.

“The government has set aside 1 billion Kenyan shillings ($7.5 million) to rebuild all the schools affected by floods,”  Ruto

Ruto also elaborated on his ‘Affordable Housing’ initiative, claiming it would prevent future displacements due to flooding and landslides. The plans include building 20,000 houses for residents of Nairobi’s informal settlements, emphasizing the dual purpose of providing dignified housing while protecting riparian areas to prevent future crises.

In recent weeks, East Africa has experienced persistent heavy rains caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon, intensifying the usual seasonal downpours and resulting in numerous fatalities in Tanzania and neighboring Burundi.
