Tribert Rujugiro Ayabatwa, a well-known businessman and manufacturer from Rwanda, passed away at the age of 82.
His death was originally announced on social media on Tuesday. Voice of America was among the media to report the story, citing family members.
As of Wednesday morning, April 17, the cause of Rujugiro’s death remained undisclosed. South Africa was home to the troubled tycoon.
Rujugiro was most known for his business endeavors, especially in the tobacco sector, where he established and oversaw Pan African Tobacco Group, the biggest tobacco company in Africa.
Rujugiro was born in Rwanda, but his entrepreneurial path carried him across international borders as he established a multisector company empire. His achievement was not without controversy, though.
The exiled Rwandan dissident was linked to illicit commerce and financing of terrorism in a study on East Africa’s fight against extremism, crime, corruption, and related illicit trade published in April 2021.
