Speaking during the 18th National Unity Club Intwararumuri Forum, Kagame shared the story while reflecting on family values, duty, and personal choice.
“My two sons have already joined the army. I wanted all three of them to join, but one of them refused and told me he didn’t want to,” Kagame said.

“I used to tell them stories about what we went through and ask them, ‘So what will your contribution be?’ Two of them agreed and said they would join, but the other one, after trying it, told me, ‘I just don’t think that fits who I want to be.’”
Kagame explained that he respected his son’s decision. “I told him, ‘If you don’t want to join, then do what you want.’ I asked him, ‘So what do you want to become?’ He said, ‘I want to make money. After school, I’ll go into business.’

Then he added, ‘Because by that time, you and my brothers will be busy with other things, I’ll be the one supporting you.’”
