Rwanda’s motorsport scene reached a historic milestone as Robin Hobbies was crowned champion of the inaugural Sprint Enduro Rwanda Championship, held on the demanding trails of Shyorongi.
The first-of-its-kind motorcycle racing event brought together 25 riders across multiple categories, delivering a thrilling mix of adrenaline, endurance, and a bold statement about the future of motorcycling in Rwanda.
Recent rainfall added to the intensity of the race, making the already challenging track even tougher. Sections of the course turned muddy and slippery, forcing riders to push their limits and rely on both technical skill and physical strength to navigate steep climbs, rocky paths, and tight turns.
Despite the harsh conditions, spectators lined the trails, providing energy and encouragement throughout the competition. Their presence created a lively atmosphere as riders battled through the demanding course.
Competitors were required to complete three laps of the 7-kilometre track. Robin Hobbies dominated the professional category, clocking an impressive time of 11 minutes and 50 seconds to finish ahead of Oliver Fietzek and Albert Krause, who placed second and third respectively.
The women’s category stood out as a strong symbol of inclusivity. Susanna Krause claimed first place with a time of 18:50, followed by Guens Alicia in second place at 19:30. Rwanda’s Iradukunda delivered a commendable performance to secure third place in 22:30.
Christian Gakwaya, President of the Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC), praised the event’s success.
“The first Enduro event we hosted was a great success, especially as it was the first of its kind in Rwanda,” he said. “It marks an important step in the growth of motorsport in the country.”
He added that an exciting calendar lies ahead, with more events planned this year, including competitions expected to attract riders from neighboring countries.
Gakwaya also highlighted Rwanda’s regional ambitions, noting that preparations are underway for participation in international competitions as the country continues to build its presence on the regional stage.
Looking ahead, he expressed hope for increased participation in future editions, particularly among junior riders.
With a successful debut, strong competition across all categories, challenging weather conditions, and growing fan support, the Sprint Enduro Rwanda National Championship is laying a solid foundation for the future of motorcycling in Rwanda.
