Rwanda and Tanzania’s military commanders are meeting in Tanzania’s Karagwe District this week for their 15th Proximity Commanders’ Security Meeting, a structured quarterly forum aimed at addressing cross-border threats and keeping bilateral security cooperation on track.
The three-day session runs from 24 to 26 March 2026 and brings together the RDF’s 5th Infantry Division and the TPDF’s 202 Infantry Brigade, the two units responsible for the stretch of border shared between the two countries.
The RDF delegation is led by Major General Ruki Karusisi, Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, while Brigadier General Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa, Commander of the 202 Infantry Brigade, heads the Tanzanian side.
The meeting follows the 14th session held in Ngoma District, Eastern Province, in early December 2025, where both sides renewed commitments to intelligence sharing and coordinated border patrols.
Those meetings are held every three months and give field commanders a structured mechanism to review previous outcomes, assess the current security environment, and plan coordinated responses to emerging threats.
The forum matters beyond military logistics. The Rwanda-Tanzania border is a busy trade corridor, and security stability along it directly affects the livelihoods of border communities on both sides.
Local residents involved in cross-border trade in areas like Kafunjo in Karagwe District have pointed to the collaboration between the two security forces as a key factor enabling legal trade to function safely.
The meeting also fits into a broader pattern of Rwanda running similar proximity forums with its other neighbours, RDF and Uganda’s UPDF held their 7th Proximity Commanders’ Meeting in Musanze in February 2026 , covering the northern border.
With the DRC situation still in flux following the Washington ceasefire process, Rwanda’s ability to maintain stable, cooperative borders to the south and east takes on added strategic weight. The outcome of the Karagwe session including any joint communiqué or agreed patrol coordination measures is expected before the meeting closes on 26 March.
